Abstract
In this study, Bifidobacterium breve IDCC 4401 which has excellent cholesterol-lowering ability, was selected among strains possessed by Ildong Pharmaceutical Co. Through in vitro experiments, B. breve IDCC 4401 showed 90.8% reduction of cholesterol in MRS broth by binding to cholesterol. The effect of ID-BBR4401 which is heat-killed B. breve IDCC 4401 was also showed almost similar cholesterol-binding efficacy when compared to live bacteria. The improvement effect was confirmed by orally administering ID-BBR4401 to rats inducing hypercholesterolemia. Total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol of all groups taking ID-BBR4401 except the low-dose group were significantly decreased in blood lipids and the levels of hepatic triglycerides and total cholesterol were also significantly decreased. In addition, it was confirmed that bile acids in the feces increased dose-dependently. In conclusion, ID-BBR4401 showed potential as a functional raw material to improve hypercholesterolemia by lowering the cholesterol level in rats.
